Tiaras often come as a semi-circular or circular band of precious metal (such as gold or silver) this is often adorned with crystals, beads, pearls and precious stones. This tiara is often worn by women on top of the centre of the head or on the forehead as a circlet during formal occasions, particularly weddings. Most often tiaras are worn in Western countries by brides to complement the bridal gown. The practice of wearing tiaras may have started from the east. Tiaras are also known as “crowns” in Persia and have been used by the Pope as a symbol of power and authority as recorded in history.
Again, a very popular alternative to the traditional tiara is the tiara comb which may have originated from the Spanish “peineta” which is a large decorative comb that is worn by women during weddings, bullfights, Holy Week processions and even during flamenco dances. The “peinets” much like the tiara comb is worn under the “mantilla” or the lace covering that covers the woman’s head, much like the veil worn by today’s brides.
Tiara combs are very versatile alternatives to the traditional tiara in that it can be worn with your hair down, partially swept up or even with the classic coiffed look. The tiara comb can be made with crystals, beads, rhinestones and pearls and are easy to wear with either fine or thick hair. The results can be as subtle or as dramatic as you would like it to be.
